Rembrandt Foods sees opportunity in protein powder market

Egg processor hopes its scheduled 2017 launch of a 90 percent protein egg white isolate will expand share for eggs in the sports and senior nutrition markets.

As the market for sports nutrition products grows, so too has the market for dried egg concentrates, used in sports protein powders.

Dried egg concentrates have captured 1 to 5 percent of the sports protein powder market. The sports nutrition market is growing outside its traditional base of bodybuilders and athletes as more casual sports enthusiasts have begun sampling these products. Another growth market for protein powders is the senior nutrition market, where the loss of muscle tissue due to aging (sarcopenia) may be slowed through consumption of easily digested high-quality protein foods.

Egg white is naturally high in protein and essentially fat free, but dried egg white fits into the concentrate category. Egg white concentrates have been competing in the protein powder market primarily with whey and milk protein isolates.

The Paleolithic diet, based on the foods presumably eaten by early man, doesn’t include dairy products, but it includes eggs. Consumers who are on the paleo diet and consume products made from protein powders provide an opportunity for egg products companies. Dried whole egg and egg white can be used as the primary source of protein in products targeting this market.

The biggest market for dried whole eggs, egg white and egg yolk is in bakeries. Dried egg yolk’s next biggest use is in salad dressing, mayonnaise and sauces. There are three main components of egg yolk: protein, neutral oil and phospholipids, which contain the choline. McKibbin said the egg oil can be used in cosmetics such as lotions and creams.
