All eggs carrying the Carrefour brand will come from hens raised in cage-free systems by 2025, the company announced.

The France-based retailer announced on November 13 that the new policy for cage-free eggs will apply to all of the company’s stores in France, Italy, Poland, Belgium, Spain and Romania. The company, which described the decision as a “new milestone in animal well-being,” stated that it will collaborate with farmers and suppliers to reach this goal.

An estimated 1 billion Carrefour brand eggs are sold every year in Europe. There are about 9,500 Carrefour stores in Europe, according to the company’s website.
