The end of the year is often a time of reflection and so, as well as wishing the very best of the season to all of our readers and contributors, I wanted to take a look at one of the examples of how of the poultry industry is demonstrating goodwill and spreading cheer, not only now in the holiday season, but  throughout the year.

The success of a business is often judged primarily on its bottom line and, even when this is deemed to be good, many find it all to easy to level at criticism at financial success without considering the broader picture.

Charitable activities that make a difference to the those in need are often all too easily overlooked, but there are certainly a characteristic of our industry across both meat and egg production.

Good cheer

Take, for example, the charitable work of U.K. food company Cranswick, which primarily operates in pig and broiler production.

In the run up to Christmas, Cranswick announced that, over the last two years, it had diverted enough food to create over 100,000 meals for vulnerable people. The company has been working with food charity FareShare since 2017 sending surplus food to charities, including those that work with homeless hostels, school breakfast clubs, domestic violence refuges and older people’s lunch clubs.

This is far from being the company’s only charitable activity, and Cranswick is certainly not alone in helping out those in need. Thankfully, there are countless examples of poultry and other food producers that are either helping their local communities or those in need overseas, extending the season of goodwill far and wide and throughout the year.

So while at this time of year I always like to extend my thanks and greetings to all of those involved in Poultry International in whatever way that might be, this year I would like to extend the season’s best wishes to all of those who contribute to improving the lives of the most needy in society, and give thanks for the difference that they make.
