Broiler production costs can be significantly impacted by feed-input costs, feed conversion (FCR), and targeted live weight at harvest. In an ideal scenario, a Dsm F Sponsrby 200pxproducer would like to manufacture feed with the lowest input cost (diluted feed) which yields the best FCR. However, this is not often the case, as in general lower nutrient density feeds yield a higher FCR. Feed nutrient density is often described as a ratio between energy and protein. Since the late 1940’s and 1950’s various studies reported improved efficiency of feed utilization associated with high-energy diets, mainly associated with the addition of vegetable oils. Later studies demonstrated the need to increase amino acids proportionally with dietary energy leading to the concept of metabolizable energy to balance protein ratio. Fast-forward to recent times, the need for high oil inclusion in broiler diets has been curbed by using feed enzymes, enhancing nutrient digestibility as well as reducing antinutritional factors and providing energy-sparing effects. As a result, oil inclusion in modern broiler diets has been reduced due to a tendency for broilers to respond well to higher amino acids and lower energy diets. He now has been with Tegel Foods in New Zealand for 6 years as a poultry nutritionist looking after broiler, breeder and layer nutrition, and R&D.
