Finland-based meat and poultry company HKScan was targeted in a cybersecurity attack, but the company said the incident did not appear to have any impact on its operational activities or product deliveries.

According to a press release that was issued on March 22, the attack occurred “around a month ago,” and as soon as the attack was detected, HKScan took immediate action and began investigating the situation.

During that investigation, which involved participation from information security experts, it was established that the cyberattack involved a data breach of HKScan’s information systems. In connection with the data breach, the attacker or attackers may have gained access to some of the personal data collected by HKScan.

“HKScan is not aware of any misuse or disclosure of this personal data to third parties. However, this possibility cannot be excluded,” the press release stated.

“HKScan takes the matter very seriously and has initiated the necessary steps to further protect its IT environment. The incident has been reported to the authorities and the company continues to work closely together with security experts and authorities to investigate the incident.”

Cyberattacks are a growing concern for agrifood companies, with several incidents in recent years. Other companies in the sector to be victims of cyberattacks include JBS and Maple Leaf Foods. HKScan, JBS and Maple Leaf Foods are all publicly traded companies.
