The Poultry Industry Association of New Zealand (PIANZ) represents the interests of poultry processing and breeding companies in the country.
Membership is voluntary, and over 99% of the country’s production is represented by PIANZ. Some 90% of New Zealand’s production is concentrated in the hands of three large companies with the remainder split between nine smaller producers.
The New Zealand flock comprised some 81 million birds in 2008. In the year to June 2009, per capita consumption of chicken meat stood at 32.5 kg, up from less than 1 kg in the 1960s. PIANZ notes that growth for its members has been particularly strong over the last decade.
The association promotes and protects the interests of its members through liaising with government and government departments and securing representation on boards, committees and commissions.
It is a member of the Enteric Zoonotic Disease Research Steering Committee, the Food Safety Partnership, and Biosecurity New Zealand’s Avian Influenza Stakeholder’s Advisory Group, among others.
PIANZ’s other roles include protecting the New Zealand industry’s disease-free status, co-coordinating research and development relating to the industry, promoting and co-coordinating industry training, the collection and calculation of technical information and statistics and general public relations.
Table egg production in the country is represented by the Egg Producers’ Federation of New Zealand.
