Established in Buenos Aires in 1970 by representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay and Uruguay, the Latin American poultry association, ALA, now has 20 member countries.
It is a non-profit organization with a mission to strengthen the health and production of the Latin American poultry industry, helping it to produce nutritional, easily accessible, high quality food, fostering the region’s employment and wealth.
ALA comprises various committees. Its committee for commercial affairs seeks to understand the effects and implications for the region’s industry of any bilateral or multilateral trade agreements.
Its poultry health committee has the remit of considering and drawing up proposals for health programs that can be applied in the various member countries for the prevention, control and eradication or poultry diseases.
Additionally, it has the function of following CODEX Alimentarius discussions – ALA has observer status – and supports ALA decisions in such areas as production, welfare, the environment, use of medicines and feed inputs. ALA takes part in FAO and WHO discussions.
Since 2003, ALA has had a congresses committee, to support the organizers of the Latin American poultry conferences.
Although independent, the Latin American Egg Institute, which has as its objective the promotion of eggs, also forms part of ALA.
