4 more turkey flocks hit by avian influenza

Highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza has been confirmed in four more commercial turkey flocks, the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) reported on June 1.

Three of the new cases have been reported in Minnesota, while another was reported in Iowa.

Those new avian influenza cases include:

  1. Meeker County, Minnesota – 4,900 turkeys affected, 10th detection in the county
  2. Brown County, Minnesota – 7,300 turkeys affected, second detection in the county
  3. Renville County, Minnesota – 29,300 turkeys affected, fifth detection in the county
  4. Hamilton County, Iowa – 17,000 turkeys affected, first detection in the county

The affected flocks will be depopulated, and the properties will be disinfected.

Minnesota and Iowa continue to be the two states with the most confirmed cases of avian influenza. To date, the virus has been detected in 20 states. APHIS has now reported 201 avian influenza cases in the U.S. that have affected nearly 44.7 million birds. The virus has also been confirmed in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and British Columbia.
