7 avian influenza cases confirmed in Iowa

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza (HPAI) inadditional seven flocks in Iowa.

The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza (HPAI) in additional seven flocks in Iowa. 

The outbreaks affected nearly 4 million chickens with another flock having an undetermined number of birds affected. In addition, two turkey flocks containing a total of 145,000 birds were infected

The following outbreaks were confirmed by APHIS on May 7.

  1. Sioux County, Iowa – layer farm, number pending, fifth detection in the county
  2. Sioux County, Iowa -- layer farm, 1 million chickens in flock, sixth detection in the county
  3. Buena Vista County, Iowa – Turkey farm, 45,000 turkeys in flock, ninth detection in the county
  4. Sioux County, Iowa – Layer farm, 80,998 chickens in flock, seventh detection in the county
  5. Buena Vista County, Iowa – Turkey farm, 100,000 turkeys in flock, 11th detection in the county (gap in numbers reflect delays in confirmatory testing of some samples)
  6. Osceola County, Iowa – Layer farm, 100,000 chickens in flock, third detection in the county
  7. Wright County, Iowa – Layer farm, 2.8 million chickens in flock, first detection in the county
