An 80-year-old man has died after being infected with H7N9 avian influenza in Hong Kong, health officials said. He was the first person in Hong Kong to suffer a death from avian influenza, but he was the second person in Hong Kong to contract the virus.

The man, who lived in Shenzhen, just north of Honk Kong, sought diabetes and heart treatment at Tuen Mun Hospital on December 3, but three days later he had flu symptoms, according to UPI. The man was transported and isolated in intensive care at Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung.

Hong Kong's first H7N9 avian influenza patient, a 36-year-old Indonesian domestic worker, is reported to be in stable condition.
