Brazilian exports of poultry meat were down in January, both by volume and by value. The country exported 277,700 tons of poultry, a decrease of 9.8 percent. However, by value the contraction was more dramatic with sales 14.3 percent lower at US$494.4 million.
According to Francisco Turra, the executive president of the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), the fall in the price of petroleum could have been a factor in influencing the lack of credit in some importing countries.
“We have examples, such as Angola, that have reduced their imports of poultry meat from Brazil by almost 50 percent. The same scenario seems to have played out in Venezuela and Russia. In the case of the Russian market, the situation is being made worse by logistic problems in the country’s ports caused by the sever winter in Eastern Europe,” Turra explained.
The disappointing January figures show a continuation in the weaker sales reported by the association in late 2014.
