The Canadian government is allocating CA$183,929 (US$ 150,803) to the Canadian Animal Health Coalition (CAHC) to help ensure that livestock and poultry are transported in a safe and humane manner by certified transporters, members of parliament announced on May 20.
This support will allow CAHC to develop an on-line driver training and driver verification system, based on the existing Canadian Livestock Transport (CLT) certification program that will simplify, standardize and provide an opportunity for truckers, shippers and receivers to more easily access the training necessary to improve handling practices.
"Our government is proud to support industry-led initiatives that help to ensure the welfare of farm animals in Canada. The transportation of farm animals is a regular part of everyday farming across the country and ensuring that it is done in a humane and safe way is a top priority," said Michael Chong, member of parliament.
Mark Beaven, executive director of the Canadian Animal Health Coalition, added: "The CAHC is very appreciative of this federal government support. Enabling the development of the Canadian Livestock Transport online platform will not only increase the number of CLT trained transporters but it will also allow the industry to develop and effectively deliver other educational programs as well."
