Exceldor purchase of P&H Foods approved by Canadian agency

Canadian chicken and turkeyprocessor Exceldor has gained approval from Canada’s federal Competition Bureauto purchase P&H Foods.

Canadian chicken and turkey processor Exceldor has gained approval from Canada’s federal Competition Bureau to purchase P&H Foods, the company that produces and sells products under the Butterball brand in Canada under a licensing agreement with Butterball LLC. The transaction includes a turkey processing plant in Hanover, Ontario, and an investment in a further processing plant in Arthur, Ontario.

Now that the Quebec-based food cooperative has received approval from the Canadian bureau, it can proceed with the acquisition, which is expected to be finalized in the third quarter of 2014, according to a report from Canadian Manufacturing.

“The Competition Bureau’s authorization was the last step necessary to finalizing the purchase of P&H Foods. As of today, we are now able to produce and market the entire array of Butterball products in Canada, primarily out of these two plants that were part of the transaction,” René Proulx, president and CEO of Exceldor, said in a statement.

The plants in Hanover and Arthur will both continue to make Butterball products for the Canadian market, according to Exceldor, which said that the new unit will operate under the name Exceldor Foods Ltd.

Financial details concerning the acquisition of P&H Foods have not been made public.
