Foster Farms has again expanded the recall of some of its chicken products suspected of being contaminated with Salmonella Heidelberg. The company expanded its recall on July 12 for the second time at the request of USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), as the agency has linked the products with a Salmonella outbreak that began in the spring of 2013 and has since caused 621 people to become ill.
The recalled products include both chicken products carrying the Foster Farms label and private label brand names, including Kroger, FoodMaxx, Safeway, Savemart and Valbest. The recalled poultry has varying “use or freeze by” dates on the packaging, ranging from March 16 through March 31, 2014, and August 29, 2015 through September 2, 2015. Also included in the recall are frozen Sunland Chicken products with “best by” dates from March 7 through March 11, 2015 and Aug. 29, 2015 through Sept. 2, 2015. Consumers will only be able to locate such dates on fresh product retail packaging. The products subject to recall bear the establishment number “P6137,” P6137A” or “P7632” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
Where the recalled chicken products may have been sold
The chicken products were produced from March 7 through March 13, 2014. These products were shipped to Costco, Foodmaxx, Kroger, Safeway and other retail stores and distribution centers in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah and Washington. The list of products subject to recall can be accessed on the FSIS website.
The original recall of the Foster Farms poultry products was issued on July 3. The first expanded recall was issued on July, when FSIS revealed that the chicken had possibly been sold to Air Force, Navy and Marine bases and commissaries. The products at the time were also believed to have been sold at Costco, Food 4 Less, Foodmaxx and Food Source stores in California, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Washington.
FSIS stated that the lists of recalled products and locations where they may have been sold will be updated as more information becomes available.
