Ground has been broken on a Jiangsu Nanjing Jiangnan poultry processing project in China’s Jiangning District. The project is expected to be put into operation in July.

As Nanjing’s first poultry processing project, it will be focused on high-density chicken and duck slaughtering processing.

According to a report from Nanjing Daily, the project is to be carried out by Jiangsu Ninggong Zijin Food Industry Co. Ltd., which invested RMB550 million (US$88.7 million) for the first phase that includes a live chicken production line that is capable of processing 100,000 birds per day, and a live duck production line that will be capable of processing 50,000 birds per day. When completed, the poultry processing project will be capable of slaughtering as many as 50 million birds on an annual basis.

“Nanjing consumes 200 million poultry birds per year, with only one third raised locally,” said Chen Guajian, the chairman of Ninggong Zijin.

The company is also planning to make an investment in a chicken farm that will be capable of producing as many as 50 million chickens per year, a forage field and 10 modern chicken farms that will have the capacity to raise as many as 3 million chickens per year.
