Mountaire Farms has backed off plans for a new office complex near Millsboro, Delaware, as the poultry company recently withdrew a land-use request with Sussex County.

Dennis L. Schrader, an attorney representing Mountaire Farms, wrote to county officials to cancel a conditional use permit for 58 acres of property, stating “No further application is anticipated,” Delaware Online reported.

While the company stated its intent was to only use the land for an office building, the proposed project began to draw opposition from Millsboro area residents that feared the land would be also be used for a poultry processing complex. Other neighbors had also expressed that they preferred that the property would continue to be farmland.

Mountaire had been looking to build a new office building after it demolished one in Selbyville, Delaware in 2014. Since that time, employees had been working in small rental offices.

The proposed facility would have housed between 100 and 200 employees.

Mountaire Farms, the seventh largest broiler company in the United States, processes 6.2 million birds weekly, according to the WATT Global Media Top Companies Database. The company, which celebrated 100 years in business in 2014, has three slaughter plants, four hatcheries and five feed mills.
