Newcastle disease has been reported at a layer farm in southern Sweden, where all 16,300 hens at the farm were destroyed. The origin of the outbreak, which was reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on July 4, is not known.

The farm, located in Motala in Ostergotland County, had a history of egg drop, according to the OIE.

Control measures, in addition to stamping out the entire susceptible population, included establishing a 3-kilometer protection zone and a 10-kilometer surveillance zone surrounding the infected farm. Movement control measures have also been enacted.

With no other apparent outbreaks in the area and the susceptible birds destroyed, the OIE considers the case resolved and will submit no further reports on the outbreak.
