A recently completed study that examined the practical use and limitations of LED light bulbs showed that light intensity depreciated over time with different LED bulbs. The study also showed that some LED bulbs are not suited for direct moisture application as can occur when the inside of a broiler house is washed.

The lighting study was conducted at the University of Georgia in Athens, and was led by Dr. Brian Fairchild of the university’s Department of Poultry Science.

In the study, LED bulbs were found to work well with the appropriate dimmer. The research project is expected to provide practical information for poultry growers and companies considering the conversion to LED lighting in poultry houses.

Dr. Mike Czarick and Dr. John Worley, both of the University of Georgia, assisted Fairchild with the research project.

The project was funded through the USPOULTRY Foundation, and was part of the USPOULTRY comprehensive research program encompassing all phases of poultry and egg production and processing.
