Chicken producers in Scotland are looking to 2 Sisters Food Group to discuss various logistical costs in growing and producing chicken in Scotland following the recent announcement by the company that it would restructure its plants at Letham and Coupar Angus.
A significant number of job losses were announced for the Coupar Angus plant in November, with 2 Sisters citing oversupply of chicken and falling demand.
The company is believed to have a long-term plan, which it says could increase poultry processing by 40 percent and create hundreds of jobs in the long term. However, in the short term, the number of poultry farmers in Scotland that 2 Sisters works with will need to be reduced.
A buyer is thought to have been found for the company's smaller Letham plant.
The potentially affected producers have formed the Scottish Chicken Growers Association, SCGA, to represent their views and particularly want to discuss regional cost variations, catching, haulage and feed. The group hopes that negotiations will lead to a stronger poultry sector for Scotland in the long term.
2 Sisters expanded its processing capacity earlier this year with the purchase of Vion's UK poultry and red meat processing businesses.
