During June, Brazil exported 43,913 tons of pork worth US$108.4 million. In comparison with June 2011, this was 16.76 percent lower by volume and 28.75 percent lower by value, according to the Brazilian pork producers and exporters association,ABIPECS.
"Export figures for June have disappointed the pig sector again," said ABIPECS President Pedro de Camargo Neto. "An increase in foreign sales would certainly reduce the depth of the crisis through which the sector is passing. June’s sales were lower than those of May 2012 and those of June 2011.”
According to Camargo Neto, there appear to be few signs that Russia’s restrictions on Brazil’s pork exports will end any time soon. But closer to home, the governments of Brazil and Argentina have reached an agreement to lift theArgentinean restrictions on Brazilian pork exports that have been in place since June. Camargo Neto said that while he hopes the agreement will be effective, it is still too early to guarantee its success.
