Zimbabwe corn harvest down 35% on late rains

Zimbabwe corn farmers planted 247,000 hectares of corn from November 2011 to January, down 35% from 379,993 hectares during the same period in the 2010-2011 planting season due to late rains, according to the country's Agricultural Extension Services. The farmers also planted 130,944 hectares of sorghum and other small grains, down from 136,131 hectares in the previous season.

The farmers also planted 130,944 hectares of sorghum and other small grains, down from 136,131 hectares in the previous season. “It looks like this year is going to be a bad year, in terms of crop output,” said Seiso Moyo, the deputy agriculture minister. The United Nations is currently seeking $268 million to help feed as many as 1.45 million people in Zimbabwe in 2012.
