Millions of chickens and ducks, as well as tens of thousands of hogs have been lost to summer floods in three Chinese provinces.
According to a report from Agriculture & Food in China, severe flooding across portions of the country during June and early July caused millions of animals to be washed away.
In the Anhui province alone, it is estimated that more than 12 million head of poultry, including chickens and ducks, have been lost as a result of the floods, as have about 80,000 hogs. In the Hubei province, flooding has claimed an additional 80,000 hogs and 3.6 million head of poultry. The Jiangxi province has reportedly lost about 5.2 million head of poultry.
It was earlier reported that Wuhan City, capital of the Hubei province, received 22 inches of rain between June 30 and July 6.
Food safety worries
The Chinese organization reported that the loss of those animals has led to food safety concerns, as it is feared that the drowned poultry and livestock are being sold for food.
Floods also lead to crop losses
It has been reported that 1.5 million hectares of crops were damaged in China during July as a result of the flooding.
