Top Dutch poultry company Plukon has announced a new joint-venture in Poland, and firms in Spain and Portugal have come together to strengthen their positions on the Iberian Peninsula.

Plukon explores opportunities in Poland

To enable it to enter the market in Poland, Plukon Food Group has reached agreement in principle on a joint venture with the Wyrebski family. The two companies will jointly develop a new slaughterhouse on a greenfield site near Wroblew, Poland.

For Plukon, the deal is an opportunity to expand its position in Europe.

“I am pleased with the future co-operation with the Wyrebski family, and look forward to jointly build a solid position in the Polish poultry market,” said Peter Poortinga, CEO of Plukon Food Group. “The cooperation is in line with our strategy to come to a fourth production country in Europe. The Polish poultry production market, which is the largest in Europe, offers exciting growth opportunities for our company.”

The transaction is subject to a number of conditions, including approval from competition authorities.

Europe’s second largest poultry meat producer according to "Poultry International," Plukon Food Group is headquartered in Wezep, The Netherlands, and slaughters around 354 million chickens and turkeys per year at eight plants.

Located in Wroblew, Wyrebski specializes in the production of high-quality fresh and frozen poultry products for the food service, retail and food industry sectors under its own brand and under private label. Its main markets are Poland and north-western Europe.

Spanish-Portuguese cooperation

VMR Group of Spain and Valouro of Portugal have agreed to come together to form a new entity, Ibergallus. According to the latest newsletter from VerAvic  – which is a member of VMR Group – the new company will be responsible for building and managing an incubator plant in Spain.

The move follows a number of shared projects between the companies, and demonstrates the clear commitment of Ibergallus to the Iberian poultry sector. It will allow VMR Group full control of its production cycle to achieve the highest possible quality, as well as reaffirming the Group’s commitment to offer consumers quality products from healthy birds reared under high animal welfare conditions.

Covering several locations, the move represents a substantial investment in hatcheries and breeding facilities, and new jobs will be created as a result.

According to the company’s web site, VerAvic has its own feed mill with a capacity of 800 metric tons of quality feed per day and collaborates with 100 professionals in an integration covering the whole poultry chain from day-old chicks to processed products.
