Zearalenone reported in US corn crop

The first report of zearalenone (ZEA) in this year’s U.S. corn crop has come in, along with an additional report of deoxynivalenol (DON).

The first report of zearalenone (ZEA) in this year’s U.S. corn crop has come in, along with an additional report of deoxynivalenol (DON), according to Neogen’s Mycotoxin Report from October 17.

The first confirmed report of ZEA from this year’s corn harvest came in from Iowa. A new confirmed report of DON also came from Iowa. Previous reports of DON have come from:

  • Michigan
  • Illinois
  • Indiana

Fumonisin

Previously confirmed reports of fumonisin in corn have come from:

  • Missouri
  • Texas
  • Illinois
  • Oklahoma

Aflatoxin

Previously confirmed reports of aflatoxin in corn have come from:

  • Oklahoma
  • Louisiana
  • Kansas
  • Alabama
  • South Carolina
  • North Carolina
  • Georgia
  • Texas

Harvest progress

The overall percentage of mature-stage corn is at 93 percent, which is 5 points above the five-year average. The amount of harvested corn is at 35 percent, 3 points behind the five-year average. Iowa’s harvest is 13 points below average, at 19 percent harvested, while neighboring Illinois’ is 11 points above average, at 62 percent harvested. Neogen said other divergences in harvest completion are more regional.
