An investigation prompted by the release of an undercover video filmed at a Lilydale turkey processing plant in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada, showed that the company was in compliance with laws and industry practices.

Animal rights group Mercy for Animals recently released the video, which depicted scenes of turkeys that were being processed but accidentally missed the kill blade. An employee described to the camera operator what happened and would happen to those turkeys that missed the blade. On more than one occasion, the employee used profane language in his descriptions.

A copy of the video was obtained by CTV News W5, which with input from industry leaders did its own investigation on the matter. The news station revealed that although the practices may be deemed cruel by some viewers or consumers, the company was following appropriate procedures and did not violate any laws.

And while the company was found not to be in violation of any laws, it has come forward saying it is planning to improve its animal welfare practices by adding the company's first controlled atmosphere stunning (CAS) system in 2017.

Company responds to allegations, investigation

In a statement on its website, Sofina Foods, parent company of Lilydale, said: “As concluded by CTV’s W5 team and the industry experts featured in the October 22nd edition of the show, the practices at our Abbotsford plant comply with current industry practices and government regulations.

“We collaborate with industry, regulatory and other experts continuously to enhance our practices. Additionally, Sofina’s first controlled atmosphere stunning system is due for delivery in the new year.

“We are disappointed by some of the statements made by individuals shown as ‘our employees.’ These comments do not reflect our culture and we will take appropriate action to ensure the very high standards we set are upheld.

“Our employees are dedicated people who take pride in producing Lilydale branded poultry products. Most have been with us for many years and we want to thank them for their continued support and diligence.”
