Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch’s plans to build a new egg production facility in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, has taken another step forward, as the Montgomery Township Supervisors have granted conditional approval of the company’s land development plan.

“[This] vote is a very positive step forward, and Herbruck’s appreciates everyone in the Mercersburg area who has taken time to work with us during the past 15 months,” Greg Herbruck, president of Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch said in an emailed statement. “Our commitment to due diligence, discussion and partnership with the community will continue every step of the way going forward.”

The egg facility will offer an economic boost for the area, Herbruck said, as it will offer about 190 jobs and represent nearly $100 million in new investment to the area.

The company’s plans were first made public in April 2016. At the time, Herbruck’s was seeking public input on the idea of a new egg production facility that would include farms to house cage-free and organic hens. Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch posted what it referred to as a special message on its website. In that message, Herbruck’s offered background on the company and revealed that it is considering a company expansion there. The company made it clear that the project would be dependent upon partnerships with community members in order for it to become a reality.

“To be successful, we count on an abundance of local businesses and farmers that we can partner with for local services, grain, feed, packaging and supplies,” Herbruck said at the time.

Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch was founded in 1958 by Harry and Marilyn Herbruck in Ionia County, Michigan, and its roots stretch back to the late 1920’s when Harry Herbruck Sr. started a Michigan-based egg business.

According to the WATTAgNet Top Poultry Companies Database, Herbruck’s Poultry Ranch, which remains headquartered in Michigan, is the state’s largest egg producer. It is the 14th largest egg company in the United States. In 2016, the company had 7.35 million hens.
