Privately owned Tnuva Food Industries is Israel's largest food manufacturer and distributor, selling poultry products, dairy, fish and meat. It owns seven out of the 10 best-known food brands in Israel and accounts for more than 14 percent of shelf space in supermarkets. Originally a cooperative, Tnuva became majority-owned by British firm Apax Partners in 2007, which announced in 2014 that it was considering selling the company to Chinese food manufacturer Bright Foods. (Bright Foods, which is owned by the Chinese government, purchased U.S. company Smithfield Foods in 2013.) Among Tnuva's minority owners is the Granot federation of Israeli farming communities, which includes feed manufacturer Ambar in its membership. Tnuva and Ambar have joint ventures in poultry. Tnuva holds about 30 percent market share for table eggs in Israel and owns the Mama brand of chicken. Total group sales for 2013 were ILS7.5 billion.
