Wayne-Sanderson Farms, based in Oakwood, Georgia, was founded in 1965 as the poultry division of Continental Grain Co. It officially changed its name to Wayne Farms in 2000. It withdrew from initial public offerings in both 2015 and 2016.
In 2021, Cargill and Continental Grain Co. reached an agreement to form a joint venture and acquire Sanderson Farms for $4.53 billion or $203 per share. The deal closed in July 2022 and the combined company is now led by CEO Clint Rivers.
Wayne-Sanderson Farms produced 148.1 million pounds of ready-to-cook chicken on a weekly basis in 2023, an increase from 145.6 million pounds processed in 2022. Its 2023 sales were $7.7 billion, a decrease from $9.1 billion in 2022. The new, combined company employs 26,000.
In January 2023, a fire damaged a Wayne-Sanderson Farms hatchery and feed mill in Surry County, North Carolina. In April 2023, Wayne-Sanderson named two new senior leaders following the retirements of Bryan Miller, senior vice president of quality assurance and food safety, and David Malfitano, chief human resources officer, after over 35 years of collective service to the company. Miller was succeeded by Dr. Juan “Juanfra” DeVillena, while Malfitano was succeeded by Pamela Roach.
