Maryland pursues electricity from poultry litter

Gov. Martin O'Malley recently announced Maryland’s "Clean Bay Power Project" -- a new plan to buy power generated from animal manure, according to a local news report. Poultry litter from Eastern Shore chicken farms now has the opportunity to supply the state with environmentally friendly electricity from litter.

Poultry litter from Eastern Shore chicken farms now has the opportunity to supply the state with environmentally friendly electricity from litter.

Those seeking to provide the manure-generated power must be:

  • able to generate up to 10 megawatts,
  • connected to the regional electricity grid,
  • able to generate electricity by December 31, 2015 and
  • able to submit bids by November 30.
