Canadian animal feed supplier Shur-Gain will shut down its poultry and livestock feed mill operations in Stephenville, Newfoundland, by the end of 2011, according to Réjean Faubert, the company's Atlantic region general manager.
The mill is closing due to a low volume of finished feeds being manufactured and limited profitability at the operation, said Faubert. "We will continue to maintain a presence in the livestock industry of the region in supplying sales and technical services — and will remain a supplier of feeds products to Newfoundland customers through our Moncton (New Brunswick) mill facility," he said.
The Newfoundland Feed Grains Society, which owns grain storage tanks adjacent to the facility, said that it may be in their best interest to purchase the mill. "Without their unloading system, we'd have to put our own in," said Bruce Simmons, the society's chairman. "We can figure a way to get grain out there without them, but it would be better to use what's there now." There has been no official offer made yet on either side.
