A 12-year-old boy has died of avian influenza on the Indonesian island of Bali after suspected indirect contact with poultry, according to officials at the country's health ministry.

The boy had been suffering from a high fever and breathing difficulties for more than a week. Tests showed he was infected with the H5N1 virus. He is the fourth person to die in Indonesia of bird flu in 2012, and raises the overall death toll to 154 since the virus was first introduced in 2005.

A 19-year-old woman died of the virus on February 13 on the outskirts of Jakarta, becoming Indonesia's third victim in 2012.
