UK poultry production steady in February

UK poultry meat production came in at 123,000 metric tons in February, virtually unchanged from February 2011 numbers, according to the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs. Broiler chick placings were 1.2 percent higher than February 2011 numbers, at 70 million birds, though down from January's 87 million birds.

Broiler chick placings were 1.2 percent higher than February 2011 numbers, at 70 million birds, though down from January's 87 million birds. Turkey placings were 14.2 percent higher in February, at 1.2 million birds. Layer chicks placed were up by 12 percent, to 2.8 million birds, from 2011's 2.5 million birds.

Broiler slaughterings were 2.5 percent lower than February 2011 at 66 million birds (from 68 million birds). Turkey slaughterings were just 0.8 percent higher at 1.3 million birds, but were down from January's 2 million birds.
