Cambodia reports third bird flu death of 2012

Cambodia has reported its third bird flu death of 2012, a 10-year-old girl who contracted the disease after preparing sick birds for food, according to the Cambodia Ministry of Health. The child became ill on May 20 in Pring Village in the Bosedth District of Kampong Speu province, and was admitted to the hospital in Phnom Penh on May 25.

The child became ill on May 20 in Pring Village in the Bosedth District of Kampong Speu province, and was admitted to the hospital in Phnom Penh on May 25. "Unfortunately, despite intensive medical care, she died on Sunday," the health ministry said in a statement. The ministry also said there is evidence of recent poultry deaths in Pring Village.

The last H5N1 death in Cambodia was a six-year-old girl from Kbal Koh village in Kampong Trolach District of Kampong Chhnang province on March 30. In 2011, Cambodia registered a total of eight fatal cases of human infection of the bird flu virus.
