Brazil, South Africa poultry antidumping case intensifies

Brazil will begin formal discussions with South Africa regarding restrictions placed on Brazilian poultry exports. South Africa has applied antidumping measures to Brazilian exports of whole birds, and to deboned cuts supplied by a number of Brazilian poultry companies. 

The Brazilian government is responding to a request from the Brazilian poultry producers’ association, Ubabef, which estimates that losses to the industry as a result of the South African measures are in the region of US$70 million. 

South Africa started to investigate claims that Brazil was dumping chicken in June 2011. In February 2012, its provisional findings supported the claim. Under informal discussions, the Brazilian government informed South Africa in May that its actions could violate World Trade Organization antidumping agreements.
