India poultry farmers gain minimum guarantee for egg prices

Indian poultry farmers have been guaranteed a minimum Rs 2.72 (US$0.05) per egg they sell to buyers, after a National Egg Coordination Committee decision to fix the minimum guarantee in order to offset producer losses incurred by farmers during the lean season when piling stocks force them to cut costs. Farmers, however, are still concerned that Rs 2.72 isn't a profitable price, saying that production costs are currently Rs 2.95 due to soaring feed rates.

They say the final profits will be in the range of Rs 2.42–Rs 2.52 (US$0.04) per egg. Current egg prices are at Rs 2.80 (US$0.05) per egg and may go up further due to a rise in consumption, say industry experts.
