The Animal Transportation Association is a non-profit international association dedicated to safe and humane transportation of animals worldwide, with interests ranging from eggs and production animals to pets and zoo animals.

Based in Reston, Va., the originally named Animal Air Transport Association was established in 1976 in response to the concerns of industry leaders, government officials and humane society representatives. In 1989, its name was changed to the Animal Transportation Association to emphasize that sea, air and land transportation are of equal importance to the safe and humane transportation of animals.

The association’s members comprise the entire spectrum of those concerned with the transportation of animals and include airlines, truckers, shipping firms, government agencies, universities, research organizations, breeders, importers, exporters and veterinarians, etc.

Among activities of the association is encouraging research, disseminating findings, supporting uniform and effective international regulations, and humane handling of live animals. Every member must agree to accept and support these and the association’s other policies.

The association offers members opportunities for education and professional development and to this end holds a three-day annual meeting. Additionally, it strives to broadcast at least six webinars each year and produces newsletters and updates.

The Animal Transportation Association’s website offers a membership directory, which includes contact details of members along with a brief description of the services they offer.
