Tyson Foods Inc. has proposed a $950,000 settlement in a class-action lawsuit involving 1,200 workers at a Council Bluffs, Iowa, meat processing plant who have claimed wage violations.
The majority of the money, however, would go to the plaintiffs' lawyers: $340,000 for out-of-pocket costs and $309,000 in attorneys' fees, according to reports. Current and former workers dating back to 2006 could claim payments from a $271,000 pot, says the agreement, based on factors such as how much they worked and their specific jobs.
The lawsuit claims that Tyson failed to compensate its employees for time spent putting on, taking off and cleaning their clothes and equipment before and after shifts. Tyson has denied any wrongdoing.
