Managers discuss challenges at HR Seminar

Human resource managers from across the poultry industry met at the 2009 Human Resources Seminar last month in Myrtle Beach, S.C., according to a press release by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association.

Human resource managers from across the poultry industry met at the 2009 Human Resources Seminar last month in Myrtle Beach, S.C., according to a press release by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association.

Issues pertaining to legislation, immigration, improving employee morale and other human resources challenges were discussed at the seminar.

Jack Kelly, director of government affairs of Perdue Farms, based in Salisbury, Md., spoke about “Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA): Card Check Legislation for Unions,” saying it would end workers’ right to a federally supervised private ballot. Kelly said companies should work with state and local chambers to build a grassroots network that can challenge union activists.

Dan Serrano, vice president human resources operations, Tyson Foods, spoke of how good morale affects higher productivity and good leadership in his presentation titled “Improving Morale and Turnover in Lean Times”. 

Gary Renick and Hipolito Acosta, P&G Global Associates, discussed the advantages of using the federal verification program, E-Verify, to validate a new hire’s eligibility to work in the U.S. in their “Immigration Update.”
