According to information from the newspaper Reforma published February 14, Bachoco "detected a possible outbreak of H7N3 avian influenza in five of its breeder farms located in the state of Guanajuato."

The company reported that the avian influenza is similar to the strain detected in 2012 in commercial egg farms from other producers in the neighboring state of Jalisco. "The company is in the process of verifying this together with the relevant authorities, and if confirmed, will work with the Mexican health authorities to take necessary containment actions."

As in all cases of an outbreak, the company "is strengthening biosecurity measures at all production facilities, particularly in breeder farms, which are scattered throughout the country – a common practice of Bachoco to reduce such risks.". The company is also exploring alternatives to mitigate possible effects.

Bachoco is the largest chicken producer in Mexico, the third in Latin America and the eighth largest in the world with approximately 503 million chickens per year.
