Denmark earned DKK 1.5 billion (about US$263 million) from sales of breeding pigs and boar semen to pork producers around the world in 2012, according to the National Pig Knowledge Center VSP. This export value for Danish pig genetics was 14 percent more than in 2011 and represented a 50 percent increase since 2008.

The export sales in 2012 included approximately eight million doses of boar semen, half of which were from Danish boars located outside Denmark.

Laurids Søndergaard, president of breeding organisation Dansk Svineavl, says continuing high levels of demand indicate that the country has the potential to increase its exports of genes by 25 percent per year for the next 10 years. Søndergaard is one of a group of eight Danish investors who have put DKK 50 million into a new pig genetics company in China where they aim to produce 5,000 breeding pigs a year.
