USDA lowers broiler production estimate

USDA Economic Research Service lowered its production estimates for U.S. broiler meat production in 2009 in a report released April 16.

USDA Economic Research Service lowered its production estimates for U.S. broiler meat production in 2009 in a report released April 16. The revised forecast expects 35.5 billion pounds to be produced in 2009, down 4% from last year. This estimate was reduced a total of 300 million pounds from the prior forecast.

Chicken meat in cold storage at the end of the first quarter of 2009 stands at 620 million pounds, down 125 million pounds from the prior quarter and 17% less than at the end of the first quarter last year.
