Poultry drug development bill passed

Legislation to expedite new therapies and drug development for livestock and poultry—among the top priorities for turkey growers and processors—is set to become law after last week's 390-12 approval by the United States House of Representatives. The Animal Drug and Animal Generic Drug User Fee Reauthorization Act provides a more predictable and timely review of new livestock and poultry medications by supporting Food and Drug Administraton's costs with manufacturers' fees through 2018.

Brand-name animal drug manufacturers' fees will be set at $23.6 million in the 2014 fiscal year and $21.6 million each subsequent year through 2018. The generic animal drug industry fees are $7.3 million for 2014 and then $30 million for the next four years.
