Specific pathogen free pig company launched in Spain

Spanish pig AI company Semen Cardona and the IRTA food and agricultural research institute of the Catalunya government are among founders of Specific Pig, a new company based near Barcelona in Spain to breed high-health (specific pathogen free or SPF) pigs and use these in biomedical research.

Spanish pig AI company Semen Cardona and the IRTA food and agricultural research institute of the Catalunya government are among founders of Specific Pig, a new company based near Barcelona in Spain to breed high-health (specific pathogen free or SPF) pigs and use these in biomedical research. 

The company has also started a genetic program to create its own line of SpeciPig miniature pigs. Although medical research currently makes more use of 200-kilogram conventional pigs, Specific Pig states, miniature pigs weighing just 35 kilograms have the advantage of lower costs for feeding, housing, handling and treatment.
