US broiler eggs set up 2 percent

Commercial hatcheries in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 19-state weekly program set 200 million eggs in incubators during the week ending June 29, up 2 percent from the eggs set the corresponding week in 2012. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 percent, according to the agency's Broiler Hatchery report, released on July 3.

Commercial hatcheries in the U.S. Department of Agriculture's 19-state weekly program set 200 million eggs in incubators during the week ending June 29, up 2 percent from the broiler eggs set the corresponding week in 2012. Average hatchability for chicks hatched during the week was 84 percent, according to the agency's Broiler Hatchery report, released on July 3.

Meanwhile, broiler growers in the program placed 168 million chicks for meat production during the week ending June 29. Chick placements were up 1 percent from the comparable week in 2012. Cumulative placements from December 30, 2012 through June 29 for the 19-state total were 4.28 billion, up slightly from the same period a year earlier, according to the report.
