A new round of vaccination against infectious laryngotracheitis has started in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

This latest vaccination round is taking place at the Nucleo Colonial Mombuca, Guatapara, and is using a live attenuated vaccine approved for import by the government solely for use at these premises. Local animal health authorities note that the recombinant vaccine has the advantage of not spreading the virus and marks the start of an eradication process that will lead to the transport of birds out of the municipality, which was prohibited in 2010.

Vaccination can be applied at the incubator or on farm. Once trained, farmers themselves will be allowed to vaccinate birds. At the incubator, application will be monitored by local animal health officials to ensure that any vaccinated chicks can only go to affected premises.

The disease was first diagnosed in Sao Paulo in 2002 in the municipality of Bastos, infecting 182 layer farms.
