Layer numbers continue to lag previous year

Table egg type layer numbers on Jan. 1 were 2 percent below year-earlier levels.

Layer numbers were only up in two of the top-10 egg producing states.

In table egg layers in flocks 30,000 and above in December 2007, Iowa numbers were up 3 percent compared to year-earlier levels. Ohio, meanwhile, was down 3 percent; Indiana, down 3 percent; Pennsylvania, down 8 percent; California, up 1 percent; Texas, down 2 percent; Florida, down 3 percent; Nebraska, down 11 percent; Minnesota, down 8 percent; and Georgia, down 5 percent.
