Merger of egg firms probed in U.K.

The British Commerce Commission is studying whether the merger of Britain’s largest egg companies – Stonegate Farmers Limited and Deans Food Group Limited to create a new company, Noble Foods Limited – will create a loss of competition.

Noble’s market share accounts for more than 60%, some reports say. Prior to the merger earlier this year, Deans was the country’s largest egg company, and Stonegate was No. 2. The commission will also look at whether the merger will affect innovation.

The Commerce Commission said in a statement late last month that if it “considers that the merger may be expected to result in a substantial lessening of competition, it will consider whether and, if so, what remedies might be appropriate, taking into account any customer benefits that might arise from the acquisition.”
