Next year’s egg prices still likely to remain strong

Egg prices in 2009 will dip below this year’s record level, but still remain strong, according to USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) June report.

New York wholesale prices are forecast to be $1.05 to $1.11 per dozen in the third quarter 2008 and $1.08 to $1.16 in the fourth quarter for an annual average price of $1.21 to $1.25.

Looking at next year, first quarter prices are forecast to be $1.00 to $1.08 per dozen, with a 2009 average of 95 cents to $1.03. In comparison, 2007 prices were $1.14; 71.8 cents in 2006; 65.5 cents in 2005; and 82.2 cents in 2004.
