No surge yet in layer numbers

Table egg type layers were 2 percent below year-earlier levels.

Layer numbers continue to be below previous year levels. Table egg type layers on Feb. 1 were 2 percent below year-earlier levels, USDA’s latest Chickens and Eggs report shows.

Looking at layer numbers among the nation’s top-10 egg producing states in flocks 30,000 and above during January, only Iowa posted an increase, up 5 percent. In other states, Ohio was down 3 percent; Indiana, down 3 percent; Pennsylvania, down 7 percent; California, down 2 percent; Texas, down 5 percent; Florida, down 4 percent; Nebraska, down 11 percent; Minnesota, down 8 percent; and Georgia, down 5 percent.
