U.K. egg prices set to soar

Egg products prices in the United Kingdom may increase as much as 50 percent, says the British Egg Products Association (BEPA), due to the spiraling costs of egg production and strong demand.

Behind the expected sharp increase in egg costs are high wheat prices. Wheat, a primary feed source used in European egg production, has doubled in price this year, and world grain stocks are at record low levels.

In addition, retail egg sales are up more than 3 percent this year and demand for egg products is continuing to rise in line with the traditional seasonal uplift.
